Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to expand designation of marine protected area in Homi Peninsula in Pohang

- The largest Marine Protected District on the eastern coast and a habitat for marine protected species such as Asian surfgrass

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) announced on August 6 that it would expand the designation of the Homi Peninsula in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do—which is rich in biodiversity and is a habitat for marine protected species such as Asian surfgrass and surfgrass—as a marine protected area.

A part of the Homi Peninsula has been designated as a marine protected area since December 2021 in recognition of its excellent marine ecosystem. Such expansion of designation by MOF following continued requests from local residents and Pohang City includes additional designation of the area from Homigot, Guryongpo, and Janggi-myeon in Pohang as a marine protected area through ecosystem survey and public hearings with local residents.

With the expanded designation of the marine protected area in Homi Peninsula in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, the total number of domestic marine protected areas has increased to 37: 18 wetland protected areas, 16 marine ecosystem protected areas, 2 marine life protected areas, and 1 marine landscape protected area.
