 - Meeting held by Minister Kang Do-Hyung of Oceans and Fisheries to check on the status of safety management of Korean vessels near the Red Sea and call for stronger crisis response and safety management of vessels in the region

On January 2nd, Minister Kang Do-Hyung of Oceans and Fisheries held a meeting at the General Situation Room of the MOF headquarters to review the status of safety management for Korean vessels operating off the Red Sea, where tensions continue to escalate following recent attacks on civilian ships by Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Minister Kang heard a briefing on the situation following the attacks and the operational status of Korean vessels in the vicinity and conducted a close review of related protective measures. He called for a stronger emergency response system through cooperation with relevant ministries to enable prompt assistance in the event of a crisis in the waters of the Red Sea.

Minister Kang gave his assurances during the meeting that efforts would be made to “closely communicate with the shipping sector to stay attuned to their challenges as well as minimize impact from the recent events on Korea’s international logistics operations.” He also urged officials to “do their best to prevent harm to Korean vessels.”
