Focusing Marine and Fisheries Investment in R&D Projects and Development of Future Food in 2024

- Briefing sessions on mid- to long-term investment plans in marine and fisheries R&D and new projects to be held January 18th through 22nd    

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Minister Kang Do-Hyung) will be hosting three consecutive rounds* of 2024 Marine and Fisheries R&D Investment Direction Briefing Sessions from January 18th (Thursday) to 22nd (Monday) to share its marine and fisheries R&D investment plans with industry, academia, and researchers and encourage participation of researchers in new projects.  

* January 18th (Thursday): Kimdaejung Convention Center, Gwangju / January 19th (Friday):
Chungnam National University, Daejeon / January 22nd (Monday): Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology, Busan  

A sum of KRW 751.8 billion has been budgeted for marine and fisheries R&D in 2024 (including the Climate Fund), which will cover a total of 114 R&D projects throughout the year. A total of 13 new R&D projects are to be launched for the first time in 2024 with a budget of KRW 30.5 billion, including the technology development for alternative seaweed meat* and marine cultured meat**, the development of marine digital navigation route demonstration technology, and the advancement of international cooperation in marine and fisheries science & technology.  

* Seaweed meat: meat-like products made from marine plants, such as algae, to mimic the characteristics of meat
** Marine cultured meat: food products produced from the cells of marine organisms to recreate meat-like food

In addition to explaining the direction of investment in marine and fisheries R&D in 2024, the briefing sessions will also cover follow-up actions concerning this year’s spending optimization initiative and plans for securing the 2025 budget and seek the participating researchers’ feedback on the same.
