On Thursday, January 23, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Kang Do-hyung visited Mokpo North Port in order to conduct a safety inspection aimed at preventing fishing boat accidents before the Lunar New Year's Day holiday. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is conducting joint special safety inspections with related organizations such as local governments, the Korea Coast Guard (KSG), the Korea Maritime Safety Authority (KOMSA), and the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives (Suhyup) to strengthen safety management on fishing boats in eleven cities and provinces nationwide from January 13 to February 7 in preparation for the Korean New Year, when the number of fishing boat users increases 1.7 times more than usual. After receiving a report from the Jeollanam-do Provincial Office and Suhyup at the Mokpo Fisheries Safety Operations Bureau on safety management measures for fishing vessels during the Korean New Year, Minister Kang Do-hyung talked to fishing vessels operating in the waters near Hongdo Island, Sinan-gun via radio in order to request safety management for fishing boats and crews. He then boarded a fishing boat moored at Mokpo North Port and closely inspected the safety management measures, including safety equipment such as life jackets and communication devices, the passenger list, and port entry/exit reporting procedures.
