Holding the 2025 International Marine Accident Investigation Forum
- To discuss the causes and preventive methods of marine accidents with domestic and foreign experts and domestic shipping companies
The Korea Maritime Safety Tribunal (Commissioner Yoon Hyun soo) of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) announced that it would be holding the 2025 International Marine Accident Investigation Forum in Busan on Thursday, July 17.
Held annually since 2012, the forum selects high-profile marine accidents or timely social issues with domestic and international experts discussing investigation techniques and preventive measures for maritime accidents. This year’s discussion will focus on “Investigation cases and lessons learned from confined space accidents on ships” and “Safety of alternative fuels and risks of ammonia-fueled ships” as topics. Domestic shipping companies and related organizations also participated in the discussion (pre-registration only).
In the first panel discussion, maritime accident investigators and private experts from South Korea, China, New Zealand, and the Philippines will analyze the main causes of enclosed space accidents aboard ships and examine the relevant International Maritime Organization (IMO) trends.
The second panel discussion will focus on the trends of international standards development for the safe use of eco-friendly alternative fuels. Participants will particularly examine risks associated with ammonia-fueled vessels—which are now nearing commercial operation—from the marine accident investigators' perspectives.
Additionally, a letter of integrity pledging transparent and fair investigation and judgment will be distributed to domestic workshop participants, including industry and organization employees.
"The ultimate goal of marine accident investigations is to prevent recurrences by identifying the root causes. We hope this forum will enhance investigative capabilities for major accidents and serve as an opportunity to examine emerging risks such as eco-friendly alternative fuel vessels and review our prevention systems,” said Yoon Hyun soo, Commissioner of the Korea Maritime Safety Tribunal.
