The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced that it would be holding the 2nd Day of the Seafarer ceremony themed “Dedication at Sea, The Pride of Korea” at the Busan Port International Exhibition & Convention Center (BPEX) at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 20.

The Day of the Seafarer is a legally designated commemorative day celebrated every third Friday of June to inform the public of the importance of seamen and increase the pride of seafarers. About 300 people including Minister Kang Do-hyung, seafarers, and officials from related organizations will be attending this ceremony to commemorate the 2nd Day of the Seafarer.

At the ceremony, 24 seafarers who have contributed to improving navigation safety and rights of seafarers will be awarded medals and commendations. In particular, Chief Cook Cheon Jin-jae of Wooil Marine—who has contributed to safe navigation and creation of a happy workplace with over 50 years of service as a seafarer—and No.1 Oiler Lim Chae-sik of PANOCEAN who dedicated over 48 years to preventing accidents and complying with international regulations will be honored with the Industrial Service Medal.

“I hope that the Day of the Seafarer will be an opportunity for the entire nation to look back on the dedication and contributions of seafarers to the national economy and daily lives. MOF will do its best to create a satisfactory working environment on board ships and to train excellent seafarers,” Minister Kang Do-hyung said in his commemorative speech.
