2025 Disaster Preparedness Training for Jellyfish Mass Outbreak
- Public-private joint operation to monitor and remove jellyfish in Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced that a joint public-private disaster preparedness training for the jellyfish mass outbreak in 2025 in Deungnyang Bay, Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do was held on Thursday, June 12 in collaboration with local governments and fishermen.
Conducted for the first time since the jellyfish mass outbreak was newly designated as a legal natural disaster, this training simulated a situation wherein jellyfish—a major harmful organism in coastal waters—were found in large numbers.
The training involved the deployment of one command ship, one surveillance ship, one purification ship, and seven fishing boats and included ▲checking the number and size of jellyfish through the surveillance ship, ▲crushing the captured jellyfish using a crusher installed on the purification vessel, and ▲removing jellyfish from the sea using a fishing boat equipped with a jellyfish cutting net. Afterward, MOF plans to analyze the training results, establish any necessary improvement measures, and incorporate them into future training.
“As this was the first disaster preparedness training for jellyfish mass outbreak, we structured it for actual field response such as surveillance and quick removal. MOF will continue to provide support in the form of equipment and subsidy of removal costs necessary for smooth prediction and removal operations in the event of a jellyfish mass outbreak,” Minister Kang Do-hyung said.
