‘Hot Spot’ for Boat Route, the Sea's Olle Trail, Departing for the Gunsan-Eocheongdo Island Route

- Holding the Hot Spot for Boat Route event on Saturday, June 7 to promote the use of the Gunsan-Eocheongdo Island route

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced that it would hold the Hot Place for Boat Route* event on the boat route connecting Gunsan and Eocheongdo Island on Saturday, June 7.

 * The name signifies “making the boat route a tourist attraction.”

MOF initiated the Hot Place Boat Route project in 2024 to transform previously little-known sea routes into tourist attractions by identifying tourism resources along coastal routes and operating tourism programs on passenger ships. This initiative seeks to mitigate the risk of route discontinuation by generating new passenger demand.

As the first pilot project launched in April last year, the Gunsan-Eocheongdo Island route saw a 20% increase in passengers compared to the average for the same months from 2021 to 2023. Encouraged by last year's achievements, MOF plans to cooperate with the relevant organizations such as Gunsan City, Jeonbuk Branch of the Korea Tourism Organization, and Gunsan University to develop and implement various programs for tourists to enjoy on passenger ships and islands. Anyone can contact Cheonggiwa, the Secretariat for the Hot Place for Boat Road Project (+82-63-446-9228).

“We plan to break away from the existing framework of passenger ships as a mere transportation means and turn them into spaces where leisure and culture coexist. I ask for the people’s interest as we implement other pilot projects in Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, and Incheon,” Minister Kang Do-hyung said.
