“Creating a Clean Ocean Enjoyed by All” National Competition for Collecting Discarded Fishing Gear

A total of KRW 50 million in prizes to be given to 24 outstanding organizations, including nationwide fishing village cooperatives and fishermen's associations

The Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced that it would be holding a competition for collecting discarded fishing gear left in ports, harbors, and along beaches during the summer vacation season.

Now in its second year, the contest aims to raise awareness among fishermen and others about the negative impact of discarded fishing gear on the marine environment and encourage them to participate in collecting discarded fishing gear independently and actively. Those who are expected to participate include fishing villages, fishermen's groups, and marine environment groups (NGOs) across the country, and they will have to bring the discarded fishing gear they collected to the designated area during the competition. All collected fishing gear will be processed by the Korea Fisheries Infrastructure Public Agency (FIPA; Chairman: Hong Jong-wook).

Fishing villages or organizations intending to participate should fill out an application form in accordance with the procedures and methods announced on the website of each local government and the National Competition for Collecting Discarded Fishing Gear (폐어구모두모아경진대회.kr) for submission to the local government between Monday, June 9 and Friday, June 20.

A panel of experts will evaluate the submitted applications based on five criteria—total amount of discarded fishing gear collected, average amount collected per participant, participation, cooperation, and best practices in preventing discarded fishing gear and managing fishing gear—and select 24 outstanding organizations*. Outstanding groups will be awarded a certificate and a consolation prize, with a total prize pool of KRW 50 million.

 * 1 grand prize award, 1 best award, 4 excellence awards, 8 encouragement awards, and 10 special awards
