Carrying on the Tradition of Fisheries Traditional Foods!
- Accepting applications for designation as Korean Fishery Food Master in the field of manufacturing, processing, and cooking traditional fishery foods on Monday, June 9 through Friday, June 20
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced that it would be accepting applications for designation as Korean Fishery Food Master from Monday, June 9 to Friday, June 20 to promote and develop Korea’s excellent fishery products.
The Korean Fishery Food Master scheme is implemented to discover masters with outstanding skills and experience in the manufacturing, processing, and cooking of traditional fishery foods and to preserve and pass down their skills. Since the designation of the first Korean Fishery Food Master in 1999, 14 have been designated to revitalize the domestic traditional fishery product industry.
The following are the qualification requirements for a Korean Fishery Food Master: (1) a person who has continuously worked in the manufacturing, processing, and cooking of the relevant fishery food for more than 20 years; (2) a person who can preserve and implement the manufacturing, processing, and cooking methods of traditional fishery food in their original form; and (3) a person who has received more than 5 years* of training on the skills held by a Korean Fishery Food Master and has worked in the industry for more than 10 years. Anyone who meets any one of the requirements can apply.

Those who are interested can submit an application together with supporting documents to the local office in their city or province, with the governor verifying the facts and recommending qualified candidates to MOF. The recommended individuals are ultimately designated through deliberation and resolution by MOF’s Central Fisheries and Fishing Village Policy Deliberation Committee following a suitability review by the National Institute of Fisheries Science and expert deliberation.
When a person is designated as a Korean Food Master, any product that he/she markets can have the “Master of Korean Fisheries and Food Products” label, and he/she can receive various kinds of government support such as product exhibition, promotion, and participation in overseas exhibitions.
"Korean Fishery Food Masters play an important role in promoting the value of Korean traditional fishery foods and nurturing successors who can carry on the tradition, so I look forward to applications from many people. We will actively support them in promoting the taste and excellence of Korea's traditional fishery foods domestically and internationally," Minister Kang Do-hyung said.
