Starting a Fish Farm Business was Difficult, wasn't It? Start Now with a Rental-type Aquaculture Complex!

Selecting Andong-si, Goheung-gun, and Sinan-gun as project operators for youth startup and rental-type agriculture complex

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced on Thursday, April 3 that it had selected Andong-si, Goheung-gun, and Sinan-gun as operators of the youth startup and rental-type aquaculture complex.

In the case of young people returning to fishing villages, the main reason for their difficulty in settling down is the lack of places and opportunities to receive sufficient education, including practical training on the entire fish farming process. Accordingly, MOF is launching the Youth Startup and Rental-type Aquaculture Complex Development Project this year in support of young people returning to fishing communities. The project will provide aquaculture facilities, infrastructure, comprehensive training, and hands-on experience to help young entrepreneurs establish themselves and settle sustainably in rural fishing areas.

As the selected project operator and a region with developed inland fisheries thanks to abundant water resources, Andong-si in Gyeongsangbuk-do plans to create a youth rental smart aquaculture complex specializing in fish inland, such as trout, catfish, and loach.

Goheung-gun in Jeollanam-do is a region where the number of returning fishermen has increased. It plans to create a cutting-edge, eco-friendly aquaculture complex for shrimp—the most preferred aquaculture product by returning fishermen—and support the settlement of young fishermen in fishing villages.

Sinan-gun in Jeollanam-do plans to create a data-based rental aquaculture complex linked to existing aquaculture infrastructure such as smart aquaculture clusters and eco-friendly mixed feed factories—with shrimp as its main product—to support technical education and training on the entire aquaculture process from breeding and feeding to processing.

“Young fishermen are the key players in enhancing the competitiveness of Korea's aquaculture industry and leading fishing communities. We will actively support the creation of youth rental aquaculture complexes so that young fishermen can gain experience in aquaculture management and settle down in fishing villages stably,” Minister Kang Do-hyung said.
