Korea, Honduras Sign MOU for Quarantine Technology Exchange for Import and Export of Fishery Products
Strengthening international cooperation in quarantine technology between the two countries to prevent the inflow of aquatic organism diseases
The National Fishery Products Quality Management Service (NFQS; Director General Yang Young-jin) of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) announced on Wednesday, April 2 that it signed an MOU with the National Service for Agri-Food Health and Safety (SENASA; Director General Ángel Emilio Aguilar) of Honduras for quarantine technology exchange for the export and import of fishery products.

Under the MOU, Korea will share its advanced fishery product quarantine technology with Honduras and strengthen the quarantine cooperation system between the two countries to prevent the spread of aquatic life diseases. To this end, NFQS and SENASA agreed to ▲exchange quarantine technologies for importing and exporting aquaculture products such as shrimp, ▲strengthen the cooperation system among aquatic product quarantine personnel, and ▲exchange information on aquatic organism disease risk analysis technologies.
Honduras's Minister of Economic Development Fredis Alonso Cerrato and Vice Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Ángel Acosta, and Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Honduras Sung Moon-up attended the signing ceremony at SENASA.
The MOU was made at the request of Honduras's Minister of Economic Development Fredis Alonso Cerrato, who visited NFQS last November to explore the Korean market for Honduran shrimp.
As one of the main fishery resources driving the Honduran economy with about 33,000 tons produced annually, shrimp is mainly farmed in the coastal area of the Gulf of Fonseca in Southern Honduras and exported to Europe, United States, Japan, and other countries.
“I am very pleased to have signed an MOU with the National Fishery Products Quality Management Service, Korea’s leading fishery product quarantine agency. Sharing Korea’s advanced fishery product quarantine technologies will further advance the fishery product disease management system for shrimp and strengthen international competitiveness," said SENASA Director General Ángel Emilio Aguilar, who hosted the signing ceremony.
NFQS Director General Yang Young-jin expects this MOU to be a cornerstone for revitalizing trade in disease-free seafood between the two countries. "We will continue to do our best to ensure that safe seafood is available on the tables of people in both countries through continued cooperation between our two organizations," he added.
