The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Kang Do-hyung) disclosed that it participated in the 2025 Singapore Maritime Week* hosted by Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) from Monday, March 24 to Friday, March 28.
* The event has been held since 2006 for the Singapore government, companies, and organizations to discuss major issues in the maritime industry, becoming a major maritime global event together with the Korea Maritime Week (since 2007) and London International Shipping Week (since 2013).
Korea is cooperating closely with Singapore in various fields such as establishment of green digital shipping routes and maritime cybersecurity. This event held discussion sessions focusing on response measures to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations on carbon emissions from ships and trends in autonomous ship technology and exchanged opinions on ways to cooperate for the successful hosting of the Korea Maritime Week and Singapore Maritime Week.
In particular, MOF met with government officials from major shipping countries attending the Singapore Maritime Week and asked for their interest and participation in the 10th Our Ocean Conference (OOC)* and APEC Maritime Ministerial Meeting scheduled to be held in Busan in April.
※ OOC, a high-level international maritime conference where maritime entities such as government, international organizations, and global NGOs gather to discuss cooperation on maritime issues and announce voluntary commitment, will be held in Busan from April 28 to 30.
The event also featured an awards ceremony held by the Singaporean Ministry of Transport to present the Public Service Star (Distinguished Friends of Singapore)—a decoration of the Presidential Order of Singapore—to IMO's Honorary Secretary-General Lim Ki-taek* in recognition of his contributions to international maritime affairs.
* Lim Ki-taek served as Secretary-General of IMO for eight years from 2016, contributing to the development of international treaties on maritime safety, prevention of marine pollution, maritime security, and cooperation among IMO member countries.
“We actively participated in international discussions on major issues facing the maritime industry at this event and requested international interest and participation in the Korea Maritime Week and OOC to be held in Korea this year. We will continue working to elevate Korea’s status in the international maritime field,” Minister Kang Do-hyung said.
