Establishing Guidelines for Introducing BIM in Port Construction Projects
Expected to promote the introduction of BIM technology for the life cycle information management of port facilities
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced on Thursday, March 6 that it has published the Building Information Modeling (BIM) Application and Practice Guidelines to introduce and promote BIM in port construction projects.
BIM is a technology that integrates information from each stage of the entire lifecycle of a construction project (planning, design, procurement, construction, and maintenance) into a 3D model, enabling the comprehensive management of information at each phase. As the core of smart construction technology, BIM maximizes productivity and safety in the construction process.
Major countries worldwide including the United States, United Kingdom, and Singapore have already actively introduced and implemented BIM. In Korea, the government is gradually mandating the use of BIM for newly commissioned public projects, aiming to implement BIM across the entire construction industry including civil engineering and architecture.
The new guidelines provide instructions and practical manuals needed for BIM implementation considering the specific characteristics of the port sector. The key contents of the guidelines include: ▲BIM task execution procedures (for commissioning, design, and construction); ▲ensuring a suitable technological environment; ▲data generation and management; and ▲preparation, submission, and management of deliverables and utilization measures. The full text of the guidelines (PDF) can be downloaded from the official MOF website.
"The guidelines lay the foundation for the introduction and application of BIM to civil and architectural projects in the port sector. Moving forward, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will actively implement BIM in port construction projects to promote the digital transformation of ports and create safer and more efficient port environments,” Minister Kang Do-hyung said.
