Securing the Future of the Maritime Sector! While Fighting Global Challenges, including Climate Change

- Oct 26th ~ 27th, 2021: Korea Maritime Week, pre-registration open until Oct 25th -

 

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Minister MOON, Seong-Hyeok) announced the hosting of the Korea Maritime Week from Oct 26th (Tuesday) to 27th (Wednesday) at the Sejong Convention Center.

 

The Korea Maritime Week is an annual international conference, which began in 2007, where experts from around the globe, including academics, businessmen, and government officials, come together to review current agendas and plan future strategies for the maritime sector.

 

Around 40 speakers and experts will be joining this year’s event, which will consist of a special panel and three thematic sessions on mariners, eco-friendly actions, and marine digitalization, to discuss their plans to overcome the global crisis, including COVID19 and climate change, and to further international collaboration.

 

Minister MOON, Seong-Hyeok of Oceans and Fisheries will start off the special panel discussion by presenting on the topic of ‘Changes in the Global Economy in the Era of (Decarbonization, Digitalization) and the Consequent Strategies for Mariners, Maritime, and Shipping Sectors.’

 

The forum will be chaired by President DOH Doeg-Hee of the Korea Maritime and Ocean University, with Director General Andreas Nordseth of the Danish Maritime Authority and Professor CHA Sang-Kyun of Seoul National University joining us in person. Moreover, Director General Frank Rijsberman of the Global Green Growth Institute, President Martin Stopford of Clarkson Research, Secretary General Guy Platten of International Chamber of Shipping, and General Secretary Stephen Cotton of the International Transport Workers’ Federation joining us online to engage in discussions to review the current era and to forecast the future of the maritime sector.

 

Afterwards, expert discussion sessions will continue on the topics of ▲ improving mariners’ human rights and occupational awareness, ▲ eco-friendly policy trends and outlook in the maritime sector, and ▲ trends in marine digital information connections.

 

The 2021 Korea Maritime Week will be held both online and offline, with all events streamed live via the official website. The conference is open to anyone interested, with the pre-registration open until Oct 25th (Monday) on the official website.

 

Minister MOON commented that “global challenges, such as global warming, cannot be resolved by the efforts of a single nation. The key to overcoming these crises is our shared collaboration and execution.” He also hoped that “this year’s event will become a venue to share the experiences and know-how of many nations, including Korea, and that it will be a turning point to establish and carry out future strategies of the maritime sector.”
