MOON, Seong-Hyeok, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, Meet Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries of the European Commission in a Virtual Manner
- Discussion take place on the possible areas of cooperation for sustainable oceans, including establishing a representative system of Antarctic MPAs -
Minister MOON, Seong-Hyeok of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea holds a virtual meeting with EU Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevicius of Environment, Oceans and Fisheries on September 13(Monday), at 4:30 p.m. in Government Complex Sejong. The bilateral discussion is expected to take place on the possible areas of cooperation for sustainable oceans.
The bilateral meeting is successfully set up after Commissioner Virginijus’s request to the Korean government for its active cooperation on the EU’s proposal of establishing a representative system of Antartic MPAs which the EU has been vigorously pushing.
Both Korea and the EU have affirmed their commitment to conserve marine ecosystem for sustainable oceans, leading further discussion on the possible areas of bilateral cooperation including the proposal on establishing a representative system of Antartic MPAs, combatting IUU fishing as well as the 7th International Marine Debris Conference(arranged in Korea, in September 2022).
Minister MOON of Oceans and Fisheries cited “It is my sincere hope that the Republic of Korea together with EU leads international agenda in order to protect global marine ecosystem and marine fisheries resources via various efforts such as establishing a representative system of Antartic MPAs, combatting IUU fishing and responding to marine debris, etc.
