MOF-WMU Cooperate to Enhance Capacity Building Against IUU Fishing

- Bilateral MOU is signed online to provide educational training to developing countries -
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister MOON, Seong-Hyeok) and World Maritime University (WMU; President Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry) sign an MOU to proceed the capacity-building project in response to IUU fishing on June 30 (Wednesday) in a virtual manner.
The bilateral MOU aims to prevent, deter and eradicate IUU fishing and promote safety of fishing boats via developing specialized educational materials and providing developing nations with educational training.
Along with the MOU, the two parties reached an agreement to hold Steering Committee on a regular basis, and further exchange the views on details in regard to the project implementation.
MOF has appointed Korean Maritime Institute (KMI) as an expert institution for the bilateral project to bring more efficiency. In this regard, KMI is expected to actively cooperate with WMU and engage in the project to develop educational materials and provide educational training for developing nations with its expertise of research and conference related to the fields of oceans and fisheries.
Director-General WOO, Dong-Sik of International Cooperation Policy Bureau cites, “I believe there is a need to strengthen capacities of developing nations against IUU fishing with the promotion of awareness on the severity of IUU fishing as well as the educational help from experts in the relevant fields”. He also added, “Advanced capacities of developing nations and further contribution to the international community are expected to be made under the cooperative project with WMU”.
