- Expressed intention to co-host the 4th UN Ocean Conference with Chile
- Announced Korea's contribution to responding to sea level rise due to climate change

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) announced that Minister Kang Do-hyung will visit the United States to attend the UN General Assembly to host the 4th UN Ocean Conference.

As the highest-level meeting in the ocean sector held every three years to implement UN Sustainable Development Goal 14, the UN Ocean Conference is co-hosted by developed and developing countries. Korea is attempting to host the fourth Conference jointly with Chile in 2028. The second Conference held in Lisbon, Portugal in 2022 was attended by 24 heads of state and the UN Secretary-General.

Since the host countries of the UN Ocean Conference are ultimately decided by adopting a UN General Assembly resolution, support from UN member states is essential. Minister Kang will also attend the 79th UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Sea Level Rise as the head representative. He will emphasize the importance of international cooperation in responding to rising sea levels and introduce Korea's efforts to address climate change in the maritime sector, including financial and technical support to strengthen the capacity of developing countries. Moreover, he plans to express Korea’s intention to co-host the 4th UN Ocean Conference with Chile as a venue to raise the momentum of the international community further.

He also plans to meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, the co-host candidate of the 4th UN Ocean Conference, and the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Oceans who is the UN's coordinator for the conference to discuss cooperative measures for hosting the conference. He will also request support for hosting the 4th UN Ocean Conference through bilateral meetings with leading countries such as the United States and France.

In addition, he will attend the event to promote the ratification of the UN Convention on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) and announce Korea’s commitment to prompt ratification and contribution plan to effective implementation. This will strengthen Korea's status as a leading country in international maritime norms.

As the highest body of the UN, the UN General Assembly consists of 196 member states gathering to discuss the direction that the international community should take with regard to significant issues facing humanity. The upcoming High-Level Meeting on Sea Level Rise will be chaired by the President of the UN General Assembly and attended by the UN Secretary-General, heads of state from over 40 countries, and ministers from more than 80 countries. As global maritime leaders gather, Minister Kang plans to explain actively Korea’s commitment to contributing to resolving global ocean issues and the rationale for hosting the 4th UN Ocean Conference. This effort aims to foster favorable international public opinion for Korea's bid to host the 4th UN Ocean Conference.

"We will attend this UN General Assembly and do our best to strengthen Korea's status as a global leader in the maritime sector by supporting vulnerable coastal and island nations affected by climate change and taking the lead in shaping UN ocean regulations. We will also make every effort to bring Korea one step closer to hosting the 4th UN Ocean Conference,” Minister Kang said.
