Public-Private Joint Demonstration of Korean Model for Autonomous Ship 
 
- Departure ceremony for the demonstration ship applying core technologies for autonomous navigation developed with domestic technology
- Leading international standards through technology and safety verification over the next year

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) and Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE) held a departure ceremony on Monday, September 23 for a container ship (Force Singapore, 1,800 TEU) demonstrating the Korean autonomous ship system at Busan North Port. Vice Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Song Myeong-dal, officials from MOTIE, and representatives from companies supporting the demonstration including Pan Ocean, POSSM, and Korean Register attended the event.

MOF and MOTIE have been jointly developing a Korean model for the autonomous ship system (2020-2025, project cost of KRW 160.3 billion). As a shipping company that signed a business agreement with the Korea Autonomous Surface Ship Project Office, Pan Ocean provides the demonstration vessel. The Project Office and Pan Ocean have been preparing to install an autonomous navigation system since the ship design stage, having completed the system installation recently.

Force Singapore will operate on the Korea-Southeast Asia route for next year, planning to integrate and demonstrate core technologies such as intelligent navigation, engine automation, cybersecurity, and operational technology in situations where weather and maritime traffic conditions ensure safety. Based on the demonstration results, MOF plans to lead a team of industry, academe, research institutes, and government officials to develop the international standard for autonomous ships (MASS code) currently being discussed at the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
