Young Fishermen in Gyeongnam to Sell 300 Tons of Locally Produced Scallops Directly to the Public Through Large Distribution Networks
- Signing of an MOU with GS Retail and the Gyeongnam Youth Fishermen's Association to secure large-scale sales channels, including an annual supply of 300 tons of scallops and direct sales of flathead mullet

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) announced that it will sign an MOU for "Co: Fishing Village to Create Shared Value" with GS Retail, the Gyeongnam Youth Fishermen's Association, the Korea Fisheries Infrastructure Public Agency, and Gyeongnam Province at the GS The Fresh Towol Branch in Changwon, Gyeongnam Province on Friday, January 16.

The "Co: Fishing Village" is a project to develop and spread new models for shared growth by combining tangible and intangible resources in fishing villages with the distribution networks and marketing know-how of private companies. This project has been underway since October 2025 in collaboration with private companies to address the pressing issues facing fishing villages due to aging populations, population decline, and climate change, and to inject new vitality into fishing villages by forming a sustainable shared-growth structure between businesses and fishing villages.

As the project's first case, this MOU will link 300 tons of scallops produced by young fishermen in Gyeongnam Province directly to GS Retail's large distribution network, enabling direct sales to the public through 583 GS The Fresh stores nationwide. Additionally, flathead mullet produced by young fishermen in Gyeongnam will be sold to consumers via pre-orders on the GS Online Mall.

After the MOU signing ceremony, a scallop promotional event and a demonstration of pre-ordering flathead mullet will be held for consumers visiting the GS The Fresh Towol Branch. Pre-orders for flathead mullet will be available from January 13 to 20 on the GS Online Mall (Our Neighborhood GS app), and anyone can easily enjoy fresh flathead mullet produced by young fishermen at a GS The Fresh store near their home.

Through this MOU, young scallop farmers in Gyeongnam will be able to secure stable sales channels, including entry into the nationwide distribution network of a major retailer and its online mall. Until March, when raw scallops are shipped, fishermen are expected to generate income from sales of raw scallops through GS Retail's large distribution network, while from April onward, additional revenue is expected from the sale of processed scallop products. Beginning with this MOU to secure sales channels for fishery products, MOF plans to actively promote the Co: Fishing Village project nationwide by linking fishing village resources across the countryincluding fishery products, landscape and space, and tourism and culturewith various private companies.

"The Co: Fishing Village project is not a government-led, unilateral support program for fishing villages, but a new type of fishing village-business win-win model created by combining the potential fishing villages with the expertise of private enterprises. Going forward, we will actively pursue partnerships with private companies so that Korea's excellent fishing village resources can be more widely enjoyed by the public, and we will spare no effort in providing the necessary policy support," said Choi Hyeon-ho, Director General of Fisheries Policy at MOF.
