The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced that sanitary and quarantine negotiations with China, which had been ongoing for the export of Korean-caught seafood to China, were finally concluded during the Korea-China Summit on January 5.

With this agreement, exports of Korean wild-caught seafood, including refrigerated pomfret, previously restricted by China's sanitary and quarantine system, will be permitted, paving the way for full-scale expansion into the Chinese market.

China has been requiring pre-approval procedures, including risk assessments, for aquatic products with no export history prior to 2011. To address this, the Korean government has engaged in persistent negotiations with Chinese authorities for the past decade to demonstrate the excellence and safety of Korean aquatic products.

This summit has finally led to the conclusion of an agreement between the two countries, dismantling institutional barriers related to hygiene and quarantine. As a result, Korean wild-caught aquatic products can be exported as long as they meet the requirements stipulated in the agreement.

This agreement permits Korean wild-caught aquatic products for export to China by meeting the stipulated requirements, including registration of an export production facility and issuance of a hygiene certificate.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries plans to promptly issue relevant notices to prevent confusion in production and export settings and to hold hygiene management training and briefing sessions for fisheries cooperatives and exporters.

This agreement marks a milestone by establishing a foundation for exporting high-value-added wild-caught aquatic products, such as refrigerated aquatic products, to the Chinese market of 1.4 billion people. In the Chinese market, with a robust demand for fresh seafood, including refrigerated pomfret, the competitiveness of Korean seafood exports to China is expected to increase.

Park Seung-jun, Director General of Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, stated, "This agreement will serve as a significant opportunity for K-fishery products to expand their presence in the Chinese market," and added, "We will persistently pursue cooperation on hygiene and quarantine measures to ensure that our excellent seafood products can succeed in expanding to overseas markets."
