The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Chun Jae-soo) announced that Korea's gim exports exceeded USD 1 billion for the first time ever.
As of November 20, 2025, Korea's gim exports reached an all-time high of USD 1.015 billion (approximately KRW 1.5 trillion). This is attributed to the enhanced quality competitiveness of Korean gim and the increase in global demand. In particular, increased sales in major overseas markets including North America and Europe—where gim consumption has been rapidely increasing in recent years—have driven its exports.

MOF has been strengthening policy support for the gim industry up to the export stage, including ▲ expanding the production base by increasing new gim farm licenses by 2,700 ha (total of 66,204 ha), ▲ expanding processing capabilities by modernizing processing facilities, and ▲ supporting overseas market development, domestic and international logistics infrastructure, and acquisition of international certifications to promote gim exports. In particular, the Ministry focused on developing gim snacks and seasoned gim tailored to the eating habits and tastes of overseas consumers and expanding marketing linked to the Hallyu (Korean Wave) to drive demand.
"Korea's gim exports of more than one billion dollars this year are meaningful because they were achieved through the policy support of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries combined with the innovative capabilities of private companies. Going forward, the Ministry will continue to support the seaweed industry and do its best to enhance the international competitiveness of Korean seafood products including gim," Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Chun Jae-soo said.
