| - The International Conference on Fishing Communities is poised to become an international fishing policy platform with participation from international organizations and 40 countries |
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Chun Jae-soo) announced that it would be holding the International Conference on Fishing Communities 2025 jointly with the Korea Maritime Institute at Songdo Convensia in Incheon from Sunday, November 9 to Wednesday, November 12.
The International Conference on Fishing Communities is an international platform for fishing policy where fishing communities, governments, international organizations, and research institutes worldwide gather to share current issues facing fishing villages and discuss cooperative measures for sustainable responses. First held in Busan in 2023, it was held in Jeju in 2024 and will be held this year in Songdo, Incheon.
Under the theme “One Sea, One Fishing Village: The Future of Fishing Villages Connecting Regions, People, and Environment,” the attendees will actively discuss the sustainable future of fishing villages through four sessions: ▲sustainable management of resources and transition to people-centered fishing community economy (hosted by the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency); ▲expansion of settlement and spread of youth and women (hosted by the Korea Maritime Institute); ▲adaptation to the climate crisis and recovery of island fishing villages (hosted by the Korea Island Development Institute); and ▲future through fishing village and regional solidarity and connection (World Bank).
Side events will include meetings of government representatives, programs related to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Blue Ports Initiative* and Korea Fisheries Infrastructure Public Agency, and national symposium for young fishermen. As an international cooperation program of FAO, the Blue Port Initiative supports climate action and expansion of sustainability in fishing ports, and related sessions and training will be conducted in conjunction with it.
* A plan that aims to transform coastal ports including fishing ports into socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable hubs rather than mere logistics and fishing bases
"Fishing villages worldwide are a single, interconnected community, sharing common challenges such as climate crisis and rural decline that threaten sustainability. I hope that the International Conference on Fishing Communities 2025 will serve as an opportunity to enhance the sustainability of fishing communities, improve the resilience of marine and coastal communities, and promote the conservation and management of marine resources,” said Choi Hyun-ho, Director-General of MOF’s Fisheries Policy Office.
