The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Chun Jae-soo) announced that it would be holding the 13th Global Ocean Regime Conference under the topic of “Maritime Law and Blue Economy* in the Era of Climate Crisis: New Challenges” at the Plaza Hotel in Seoul from Monday, November 3 to Tuesday, November 4.
* An economic system that simultaneously achieves economic growth and improved quality of life by sustainably utilizing marine resources while preserving the marine ecosystem.
This event will bring together leading domestic and international maritime law scholars and experts to discuss in depth international cooperation and institutional responses to the challenges posed by climate change.
The discussion will focus on each topic starting with the keynote speech by arbitration tribunal judge Paik Jin-hyun, followed by talks by Judge Rhee Zha-hyoung at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), member Lee Geun-kwan of the United Nations International Law Commission (ILC), and others. Moreover, the event will feature a special lecture by ITLOS Judge Liesbeth Lijnzaad and presentations by leading global maritime law scholars including Professors Alexander Proelss and Erik Franckx to share their professional expertise.
“In the face of the reality of the climate crisis, the role of maritime law is becoming more important in solving the challenges we face. I expect this meeting to be an opportunity for the international community to seek common solutions and contribute to the establishment of an advanced blue economy,” Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Chun Jae-soo said in his welcome speech.
