The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Chun Jae-soo) and the Korea Fisheries Infrastructure Public Agency (FIPA; Chairman Hong Jong-wook) announced that it would be holding a contest aimed at developing creative products from six types of recycled shellfish by-products covered by the Fisheries By-Product Recycling Promotion Act beginning Monday, October 13.
The first contest will be held in 2025 to identify excellent products made from recycled fisheries by-products, promote industry revitalization, raise social awareness of recycling, and promote resource circulation. The contest is notable since, instead of providing a cash prize, government and public institutions will directly purchase the winning entries with an equivalent amount of money. The purchased items will be used as souvenirs for internal and external guests and gifts for visitors to fishing villages and aquaculture-related expos. Furthermore, there are plans for year-round, ongoing promotion at various domestic and international exhibitions and fairs.
The contest targets recycled products using by-products from six types of shellfish covered by the Fisheries By-Product Recycling Promotion Act, and anyone can participate. Shellfish by-products are mainly made of calcium carbonate and are currently used as calcium hydroxide and soil enhancers, and they are also important as carbon sinks. The contest categories are creative products such as crafts and daily necessities that can be commercialized. All entries must use fishery by-products produced in Korea.
MOF and FIPA will award prizes to the contest winners and purchase products worth the prize money instead of paying it.
Application documents will be accepted online from October 13 to November 7. Anyone intending to participate in the competition can submit their information and product portfolio and consent to the use of personal information through reshell@fipa.or.kr. Those who submit application documents will be individually informed of the actual item submission period, method, and future procedures. Detailed information on contest participation is available at the FIPA website (www.fipa.or.kr).
A panel of expert judges will first conduct an in-depth evaluation of the physical products, limited to those that passed the document screening. They will select a predetermined number of candidates based on the highest scores, with the final winners to be determined by combining the scores from this physical evaluation (70%) with a public vote (30%) conducted on the Sotong 24 website (www.sotong.go.kr) from November 27 to December 7. The top five highest-scoring products will be confirmed as the winners.
As a side event, A Shell of Ideas will also be held concurrently with the contest to collect ideas for recycling marine by-products. Anyone can submit ideas for the practical recycling of fisheries by-products via card news posted on the social media (Instagram) of MOF and FIPA from October 13 to November 7; following a review process, 10 outstanding ideas will be selected, and each winner will receive a 30,000-won Onnuri gift voucher. Even if an idea is not selected as a winner, simply participating makes one eligible for a lottery from which 100 participants will receive a mobile coffee coupon.
"We prepared this contest to raise public awareness of the necessity of recycling fisheries by-products. Through this contest, we aim to enhance public recognition of recycled products made from fisheries by-products and support actively the efforts to increase the resource value of these materials," said Park Seung-jun, Director-General of MOF’s Fisheries Infrastructure and Aquaculture Policy Bureau.
