All-Out Effort in the Final Stretch to Host the 4th UN Ocean Conference
-  Joint preparations by Korea and Chile... Finalization of the host country at the UN General Assembly in December

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Jeon Jae-soo) said that it has been making every effort to host the 4th UN Ocean Conference to be held in 2028.

Vice Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Kim Seong-beom attended the UN SDG 14 Think Tank Conference held at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in the United States from September 20 to 21. The meeting was chaired by the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Oceans, and about 20 influential figures in the ocean sector gathered to discuss the UN's maritime target after 2030 (Post-2030 SDG 14) and international maritime cooperation measures.

Vice Minister Kim Seong-beom emphasized that the 4th UN Ocean Conference “will serve as an important forum for discussion on setting global maritime goals for the post-2030 period since it is held before 2030, the target year for the transition to a post-SDG system,” drawing broad sympathy from the attendees. “In preparing for the Ocean Conference, we will promote the participation of a wide range of stakeholders including not only governments of each country but also international organizations, civil society, and private sector,” he added.

After the meeting, he held separate interviews with the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Oceans and the Chilean Climate Ambassador and discussed strategic cooperation measures for adopting the Resolution to Confirm the Host Country of the 4th UN Ocean Conference at the UN General Assembly in December.

“Hosting the 4th UN Ocean Conference will be an important opportunity for Korea to fulfill its responsibility to the international community as a leading maritime nation and to lead key maritime agendas. We will do our best to ensure that Korea is confirmed as the host country of the 4th UN Ocean Conference at the UN General Assembly in December this year,” Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Chun Jae-soo said.
