Operating a Public-Private Consultative Body Led by Fishermen to Commercialize Domestically Produced Bluefin Tuna
- Official launch of public-private partnership for bluefin tuna fisheries to secure income for fishermen

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Chun Jae-soo) announced that it would officially launch a public-private consultative body at the Conference Room of the Gyeongbuk Provincial East Sea Regional Headquarters on Wednesday, August 27 at 2:00 PM to commercialize the Pacific bluefin tuna, whose numbers in set nets* have surged recently due to climate change.

A bluefin tuna is a mackerel family fish that is considered a high-quality fish worldwide. Immediately after it is caught, blood and innards are removed, and it is kept at low temperature (rapid cooling) quickly to be commercial-grade.

The consultative body will be participated in by MOF, local governments, Korea Fisheries Resources Agency (FIRA), fishermen, fisheries cooperatives, and distribution and processing companies in preparation for the continued increase in bluefin tuna catch due to climate change. The council will discuss methods of handling bluefin tuna (instant kill, bloodletting, and evisceration), establishment of a catch reporting system, and building of a distribution system for bluefin tuna.

“We hope that the public-private consultative body will help bring in real income for fishermen. For its part, the government plans to continue its efforts to increase the income from bluefin tuna,” said Hong Lae-hyung, Director General of MOF’s Fisheries Policy Bureau.
