| Issuance of Red Tide “Caution” Alert |
- Crisis response phase begins following the issuance of a red tide warning for two coastal areas (Gyeongnam and Jeonnam)
|
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Chun Jae-soo) announced on Tuesday, August 26 that the red tide “Caution” alert was issued from 4 PM. This is a measure taken in response to the National Institute of Fisheries Science’s announcement of a preliminary special alert for the waters off Namhae, Gyeongsangnam Province on August 25, followed by additional special alerts for Gamak Bay in Yeosu, Jeollanam Province and Namhae, Jeollanam Province just one day later on August 26.
A red tide is a natural phenomenon wherein the color of the seawater turns red due to the abnormal growth of harmful algae. When the harmful algal bloom species Cochlodinium grows and attaches to the gills of farmed fish, mass mortality can occur. The National Institute of Fisheries Science reported that the heavy rains in July and August kept the water temperature at 24-27℃, which is suitable for the growth of Cochlodinium; thus creating favorable conditions for the influx of red tide. It also said that the red tide would highly likely spread to adjacent waters between Wando and Tongyeong in the future.
MOF established the Comprehensive Countermeasures for High Water Temperature and Red Tide at the end of May, provided response equipment such as yellow soil, and conducted a joint public-private quarantine mock training in Yeosu on June 26. With the issuance of “Caution” alert, MOF plans to △operate a comprehensive situation room, △disperse anti-spill agents, △strengthen surveillance, and △analyze the spread trajectory. The Ministry will also disseminate the relevant information to the relevant parties through the red tide information system website (www.nifs.go.kr/red/). Anyone can receive red tide information via SMS by texting the Red Tide Situation Room (051-720-2261).
“The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will closely monitor the trend of red tide and make every effort to prevent damage to the fishing industry. I ask fishermen to manage the situation thoroughly by controlling feed supply and stocking density,” Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Chun Jae-soo said.
