The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Chun Jae-soo) will hold a meeting with container terminal operators at Busan New Port on Friday, September 2 to discuss the introduction of domestically produced electric yard tractors (equipment used to transport containers within ports) to container ports.
MOF has launched the project of helping ports become carbon-neutral by reducing carbon emissions within ports. This project will subsidize the cost of converting existing diesel- or LNG-powered yard tractors into domestically produced, carbon-free (electric) equipment. Prior to the introduction of the first domestically produced electric yard tractor, a field demonstration test in actual operation was underway at Pier 4 of Busan New Port in July.
The Ministry plans to share the test results and provide equipment demonstrations at the meeting. The test will focus on verifying the functions required to utilize the equipment at piers, such as performance and durability of the electric yard tractor, battery safety, and convenience of charging. Starting September 19, MOF will recruit recipient dock operators through a public offering and will support 50% (25% from the government, 25% from the port authority) of the equipment introduction costs.
“As environmental regulations have become stricter, it is important to convert handling equipment into eco-friendly models to reduce port carbon emissions. We hope that this support project will be a catalyst for the transition to eco-friendly ports and foster the growth of the Korean port equipment industry,” Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Chun Jae-soo said.
