Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Hwang Jong-woo visited a land-based tank farm raising starry flounder in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, on Saturday, August 8, to inspect responses to high water temperature disasters and assess damage. Water temperatures in Gyeongbuk have recently been around 6°C higher than a year earlier. According to the National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS), as of 1 p.m. on August 7, the water temperature at Hajeong in Guryongpo was 28°C, up 5.8°C year on year, while the temperature in Yeongdeok was 29.2°C, up 6.2°C. These high temperatures are causing losses for fishers farming starry flounder, which are vulnerable to high water temperatures and have an upper temperature limit of 27°C.
