On Thursday, July 9 at 2:00 PM, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and KEPCO MCS signed an MOU at the KEPCO MCS Mapo-Yongsan branch in Seoul for prompt and efficient management of marine debris in island areas. KEPCO MCS, a subsidiary of Korea Electric Power Corporation, manages electricity metering, arrears, and bill delivery, while operating 65 island power plants in major inhabited islands such as Baengnyeongdo and Heukando. Plant workers possess field-response capabilities to detect and manage marine waste and environmental anomalies early. Leveraging their on-site network, both organizations plan to jointly promote marine litter cleanup, reporting of anomalies like oil spills or large waste accumulations, and marine protection campaigns, establishing a public-private cooperative model.
