The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) held a commemorative event on Thursday, February 5, at the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology in Busan to support the deployment of LEO satellite Internet services such as OneWeb and Starlink through the Seafarers' Fund jointly managed by labor, management, and government.

Vice Minister of Science and ICT Ryu Je-myeong also attended the event and lauded the achievements made possible through close governmental coorporation. Most vessels rely on geostationary satellite Internet, making it difficult for seafarers' to contact their families or watch videos during their free time. Accordingly, since 2023 MOF has continuously consulted with the Ministry of Science and ICT to reach labor-management agreement on the rapid introduction of high-speed onboard Internet and to establish technical standards for LEO satellite Internet use. As LEO satellite Internet becomes widespread, seafarers will be able to use Internet services on the vast ocean at speeds comparable to land-based LTE—over 50 times faster than before—greatly improving their living conditions.
