Gather in Busan
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it will co-host the 2026 World Maritime Day Parallel Event with the International Maritime Organization(IMO) at the Busan Port International Exhibition & Convention Center(BPEX) on October 26–27, 2026.
World Maritime Day was designated in 1978 to commemorate the entry into force of the Convention on the International Maritime Organization, the UN specialized agency responsible for globally harmonized rules and regulations on maritime safety and marine environmental protection. Each year, IMO co-hosts the World Maritime Day Parallel Event with one Member State, designated with the support of 176 IMO Member States and the approval of the IMO Council.
This year's event is the third to take place in Asia, following Singapore in 2006 and Japan in 2015. It is also the largest international shipping and shipbuilding event the Ministry has hosted since relocating to Busan. Around 400 participants from 50 countries will attend, including IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, heads of international organizations, ministerial-level officials from key shipping countries, and representatives of industry, academia and research institutes from Korea and abroad.
Under the theme “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence,” high-level government officials and experts from around the world will hold in-depth discussions across four sessions.
Following the Parallel Event, Korea Maritime Week(KMW) will be held on October 28–29, offering a look at the present and future of the maritime industry. Highlights include:
▲ International Maritime Mobility Forum 2026, exploring future directions in ship technology
▲ The 10th Digital@Sea Asia-Pacific Conference, one of the three major international conferences on maritime digitalization
▲ International Shipping Decarbonization Forum, exploring how to lay the groundwork for green shipping corridors
▲ The 2026 Mock IMO Assembly, aimed at discovering promising Korean talent in IMO-related fields
Now in its 20th edition, Korea Maritime Week continues to build on progress in the maritime industry and achievements in international cooperation, and has established itself at home and abroad as a leading global platform for maritime exchange.
“In this meaningful year marking the 150th anniversary of the opening of Busan Port and the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, I am delighted to host the World Maritime Day Parallel Event and the 20th Korea Maritime Week in Busan, Korea's maritime capital.” He added, “I hope this event will provide a platform for solidarity to help usher in a new era for the international maritime sector and an opportunity for the Republic of Korea to play a leading role in the international community as a maritime powerhouse.”, said Minister Hwang Jong-woo.
