South Korea Opens the Era of the Arctic Route! Returning to Busan After Completing the First Container Ship Trial Run
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it would be holding a Welcome Ceremony for the Arctic Route Trial Operation at the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology at 15:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 13 to commemorate the return of the Panstar Acro after completing a trial round-trip voyage on the Arctic route and to congratulate the crew and officials for their hard work.
The Panstar Acro departed Busan New Port around 21:00 P.M. on August 22 and arrived in Felixstowe, UK 20 days and 5 hours later via the Northeast Passage. Afterward, it called in Rotterdam, Netherlands and Gdansk, Poland in succession, and then returned to Busan Port on Sunday, October 11 via the Northeast Passage. This is the first time a container ship from a Korean shipping company has traveled between Korea and Europe using the Arctic route.
This trial voyage is significant because—despite the uncertain polar environment and international situation—the government and private sector collaborated to verify the Arctic route's technical, environmental, and commercial potential using a vessel loaded with actual export container cargo; thus establishing a new option for our maritime logistics network.
Approximately 200 people will attend the event including Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Hwang Jong-woo, Busan Mayor, members of the National Assembly, heads of public institutions related to shipping and logistics, officials from the shipping company conducting the trial operation, returning crew members and their families, and local business leaders. The event will begin with a welcome for the crew members returning from a long voyage, followed by a report on the trial operation and awarding of plaques of appreciation to those who contributed.
Based on the experience and data gained from this voyage, MOF plans to prepare for subsequent trial operations and commercial operations and promote the Arctic route continuously as a long-term national project. Through this, it plans to diversify import and export logistics networks, develop a maritime metropolitan area including Busan, and expand new growth opportunities for the shipping, shipbuilding, port, and logistics industries.
“This trial voyage is a significant feat since it confirmed the potential of a new sea route for Korea by actually traversing the Arctic route with a container ship carrying Korean export cargo. I am grateful for the dedication of the crew who completed the voyage and the officials who supported them. We will build upon this success for the next voyage and continue to make steady preparations so that the Arctic route can become a new opportunity for our economy,” Minister of MOF Hwang Jong-woo said.
