Improving Marine Survey Work Efficiency Using Artificial Intelligence
The Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency (KHOA; Director General Jang Myo-in) of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) announced that it has developed two programs—one to streamline water temperature and salinity data processing and another to manage marine science survey data catalogs—by leveraging the AI and digital capabilities of young interns.
The ocean data processing program improved processing speed by automating the existing 9-step manual processing of ocean observation data into a single-click execution. Moreover, the ocean data catalog management program automatically ▲compares and ▲checks marine science survey data catalogs from 25 industry, academic, and research institutions provided by KHOA, ▲identifies errors, and ▲improves data management efficiency.
This improvement has reduced the processing time for marine observation data such as water temperature and salinity, enabling the provision of the latest observation data to the public more quickly. In particular, KHOA plans to make the water temperature and salinity observation data processed by the program readily available to the public through the agency's Bada Nuri Marine Information website. KHOA also provides accurate marine science survey data catalogs through its Open Sea platform, enabling all citizens including researchers to use marine information on waters under Korea's jurisdiction more accurately.
Two young interns (Kim Nam-hee and Choi Min-seo) at the Ocean Science Research Laboratory of KHOA participated in the program development using a conversational coding approach known as “vibe coding” that involves writing code using generative AI.
“We will continue to enhance the efficiency of marine survey operations and provide better marine information services to the public through continuous improvements. I am particularly pleased that the youth internship program has gone beyond providing basic administrative experience to become an opportunity for mutual growth, where the fresh perspectives and AI capabilities of young people meet national marine survey work,” said Jang Myo-in, Director General of KHOA under MOF.
