Expanding Marine Environment ESG Cooperation with Companies
- Marine Environment ESG Roundtable to be held on October 7, identifying and discussing corporate-participatory cooperation projects

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it would be hosting a marine environment ESG* roundtable at Seoul Square on Wednesday, October 7 at 2:00 P.M., with companies, organizations, and related agencies attending. This meeting was organized to expand cooperation between the government and companies in the marine environment sector and to identify collaborative projects where companies can actually participate.
* ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance): A management approach that considers environmental and social responsibility along with transparent governance in corporate management.

Corporate interest and participation in the marine environment sector continue to grow with the recent spread of corporate ESG management. Accordingly, MOF has implemented various cooperation projects to link corporate resources, personnel, and expertise with marine environmental policies.

Notably, MOF has carried out a KRW 5 billion tidal flat vegetation restoration project in Maehyang-ri, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, with Kia Corp. since 2022; a second project worth 26 billion won is underway in Seocheon, South Chungcheong Province starting this year, continuing until 2029. The Adopt-A-Beach Program is also being operated with the participation of 60 companies and organizations to keep 43 beaches nationwide clean. Amidst continuing public interest in marine animal protection following the rescue of the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin Anmok-i, a business agreement was recently signed with KT&G as well to support the rescue and treatment of marine animals including sea turtles.

To expand this cooperation further, MOF has identified cooperation projects in various fields including tidal flats, blue carbon, marine life protection, marine waste reduction, and resource circulation. This meeting introduces the details of each project as well as how to participate, enabling companies to find initiatives that suit their specific circumstances and areas of interest.

In addition to financial contributions from companies, MOF plans to offer various ways to participate: providing technology, data, and expertise; supporting facilities and equipment; and enabling direct employee participation. It will also hear from companies and organizations about their interests and needs for cooperation to connect them to public-private partnership projects.

Moreover, this meeting will introduce the direction of the 4th United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) in 2028 and ways for companies to participate. Building on the hosting of the UN Ocean Conference, MOF plans to actively showcase Korean companies’ efforts and achievements in marine environmental conservation to the international community and promote successful examples of public-private cooperation.

“To nurture and protect our seas, active participation from businesses as well as the public is necessary, not just the government’s efforts. We will consolidate the diverse capabilities of companies to create greater change for our seas,” said Seo Jeong-ho, Deputy Minister for Ocean Policy at MOF.
