Full Lifting of High-Water Temperature Disaster Alerts
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it would be fully lifting the high-water temperature disaster alerts starting at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, September 30. This follows the lifting of high-water temperature advisories in 10 sea areas, including waters off the west and south coasts of Jeonnam Province where high-water temperature advisories had remained in effect.
The high-water temperature disaster advisory and warning* took effect at the “Caution” level on Tuesday, July 14; it was escalated to the “Severe” level on Thursday, July 30, remaining in effect for 78 days until Wednesday, September 30. In some sea areas where the high-water advisory** was issued, water temperatures were up to 7–8℃ higher than last year.
* Attention → Caution (Preliminary Special Advisory Issued) → Warning (4 or more Advisories) → Severe (15 or more Advisories)
** Preliminary advisory (Water temperature reaches 25℃) → Advisory (Water temperature reaches 28℃) → Warning (Water temperature of 28℃ persists for 3 days or more)
MOF has provided a total budget of KRW 9.4 billion for high-temperature response equipment to minimize damage caused by rising water temperatures. It also collaborated with local governments, and fishers on active responses such as bringing seafood products to market early to minimize damage from high temperatures and urgently releasing 19.3 million fish.
With the damage from the recent high-water temperature disaster entering its final phase, MOF announced that it would be devoting all its efforts to supporting fishers' recovery. In particular, after paying KRW 9.6 billion in the first round of disaster relief funds before Chuseok, it will prepare a second recovery plan in October and provide additional funds.
“Despite higher water temperatures than last year, we were able to mitigate the damage thanks to the active efforts of fishers. We will swiftly complete damage assessments and the distribution of disaster relief funds, while closely analyzing this year’s damage to strengthen our efforts to minimize the impact of high water temperatures next year,” Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Hwang Jong-woo said.
