Opening of the National Cheongju Marine Science Museum, the First of its Kind in a Landlocked Region
- Full-scale operation begins on September 30 following the opening ceremony on Tuesday, September 29… Expanding opportunities for inland residents to enjoy marine culture

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it will hold the opening ceremony for the National Cheongju Marine Science Museum (Director Nam Ki-heon)—the first national marine cultural facility in an inland region—on Tuesday, September 29, and begin full-scale operations on Wednesday, September 30.

Held under the theme "Opening the Future of the Ocean with the People from the Center of Korea," the opening ceremony was attended by approximately 200 people including Minister Hwang Jong-woo of MOF, Chungcheongbuk-do Governor Shin Yong-han, Chungcheongbuk-do Superintendent of Education Yoon Gun-young, and Cheongju Mayor Lee Jang-seop—as well as local residents and dignitaries from various sectors—to celebrate the launch of the National Cheongju Marine Science Museum.

The National Cheongju Marine Science Museum is located in Cheongwon-gu, Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do. It was built as an experiential space with the exhibition theme "The Ocean As Seen Through Science, The Future Found in the Ocean," where visitors can explore challenges facing humanity such as climate change and resource depletion from an oceanic perspective and find ways to create a sustainable ocean together. The project cost KRW 98.3 billion, spanning the basement up to the third floor for a total floor area of 14,980 m².

Major exhibition spaces include: the Future Ocean Outlook Hall (3rd floor), which explores solutions to marine issues such as climate change, marine pollution, and resource depletion; the Digital Aquarium (2nd and 3rd floors), an immersive video experience hall for observing diverse marine life; and the Children's Marine Experience Hall (1st floor), where visitors can learn about the problems of marine debris and the importance of a clean ocean through play.

To commemorate its opening, the National Cheongju Marine Science Museum is holding an event from Wednesday, September 30 to Monday, October 5 where visitors who complete a stamp tour of each exhibition hall will receive a small souvenir. Additionally, a magic show for families will be presented from Saturday, October 3 to Monday, October 5.

In addition, starting Wednesday, September 30, it will operate customized educational programs including “Follow the River to the Sea!” and “Protect the Sea Friends’ Homes!” for preschoolers and elementary school students and feature a special exhibition commemorating the opening, titled “Beginning, New Wave.”

"The National Cheongju Marine Science Museum is an institution created to allow all citizens to enjoy marine culture together, transcending the boundaries between coastal and inland regions. I hope the museum establishes itself as a hub for marine education in inland regions and serves as a steppingstone for more young people to learn about and explore the ocean and develop into future professionals in the marine sector," said Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Hwang Jong-woo.
