Minister Hwang Jong-woo Attends High-Level Plenary Meeting on Sea Level Rise
- Emphasizing the adoption of the UN Declaration on Sea Level Rise and cooperation through the 2028 UN Ocean Conference

Minister Hwang Jong-woo of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) attended the 2nd High-Level Plenary Meeting on Sea Level Rise held at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York on Thursday, September 24 (local time) as head of the Korean Delegation.

Khalilur Rahman, President of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly, presided over the meeting, which was attended by more than 30 heads of state including Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. and Malta Prime Minister Robert Abela and more than 60 ministers. It adopted the UN Declaration on Sea Level Rise, which reaffirmed that sea level rise is an urgent issue that the international community must address together, and expressed commitment to a joint response.

Through this declaration, UN member states emphasized that rising sea levels pose a grave threat, affecting not only livelihoods but also culture, heritage, and even national identity and sovereignty. They also agreed to ▲strengthen scientific, data, and financial support, ▲expand international cooperation to strengthen the resilience of coastal infrastructure and protect culture and heritage, and ▲continue sustained high-level dialogue and follow-up measures on sea level rise.

“To create tangible change on the ground in response to the threat of rising sea levels, strong partnerships across science, finance, and the international community are essential. We will work to ensure that the 4th UN Ocean Conference, to be held in Busan in 2028, drives practical action by the international community and further advances discussions and cooperation on sea level rise,” said Minister Hwang Jong-woo.
