Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to Respond to Consumer-Perceived Price Trends of Seasonal Seafood Products During Chuseok
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it would be launching Chuseok Seafood Price Stabilization Measures to ensure that the public can tangibly feel price stability during Chuseok.
The core of this measure is to monitor closely and manage the final price paid by consumers in the market each day. MOF will monitor the price trends of six major seasonal products—pollack, mackerel, squid, hairtail, yellow croaker, and dried anchovies—on a daily basis and, if signs of a price increase appear, immediately implement measures such as releasing stockpiled goods and expanding discount support.

The Chuseok Seafood Price Situation Room overseen by the Vice Minister of MOF will be activated to monitor the prices of six major seasonal products—mackerel, pollack, squid, hairtail, yellow croaker, and dried anchovies—every day.
If abnormal signs appear, the government will respond flexibly to market conditions such as increasing the release of the relevant stockpiles and strengthening discount support. The official website of the Korea Fisheries Grand Sale (fsale.kr) will provide information on the price fluctuations of major seasonal products, which the public can check at a glance.
In addition, a joint field inspection team of the relevant agencies led by the National Fisheries Quality Management Service is operating to bring order to the distribution sector. MOF plans to conduct intensive inspections to check for false labeling of origin and to ensure that government stockpiles and discount support are properly reflected in actual prices, so that consumers can purchase seafood with peace of mind during the holiday season.
<② Release of record-breaking 22,000 tons of government-stockpiled seafood>
MOF will release 22,000 tons of government-stockpiled seafood—the largest amount ever—to ease the actual shopping burden on the public. MOF originally planned to release 20,000 tons of government-stockpiled seafood, which has been supplied since Monday, August 24, but allocated an additional 2,000 tons to stabilize prices during Chuseok. The discount rate has also been expanded from the original plan (up to 40%) to up to 50%, and shoppers can purchase items at traditional markets, supermarkets, and online malls until Sunday, September 27.

MOF will launch a large-scale discount campaign across hypermarkets, traditional markets, and online malls with a record-high budget of KRW 44 billion.
First, the Korea Fisheries Grand Sale – Chuseok Special Sale will be held from Wednesday, September 9 to Sunday, October 4. People can purchase popular seafood such as pollack, squid, mackerel, hairtail, yellow croaker, and dried seaweed—as well as popular farmed fishery products such as freshwater eel, abalone, and flounder—at up to 50% off at 56 supermarkets nationwide and online malls. The limit per person was also raised from the existing KRW 10,000 to KRW 20,000.
Meanwhile, the government prepared benefits for consumers visiting traditional markets. The Onnuri Gift Certificate Refund Event will be held at 300 traditional markets nationwide from Wednesday, September 16 to Sunday, September 20.. During the event period, anyone who presents a receipt for a domestic seafood purchase at the refund booth will immediately receive an Onnuri gift certificate worth up to 30% of the purchase amount, with a limit of KRW 20,000 per person. The number of participating markets also increased significantly from 200 to 300 compared to last year.
A Mobile Gift Certificate for Seafood—which can be easily used with a smartphone—will be issued as well with a 20% upfront discount, 10 times in all, at 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM every Thursday from September 3 to Thursday, October 1. People can make purchases of up to KRW 100,000 per person on the Biple Pay app and enjoy discounts of up to KRW 20,000.
Moreover, Affordable Chuseok Gift Sets will be offered to help ease the cost of holiday gifts. A total of 18 types of practical gift sets—including dried yellow corvina, Jeju silver hairtail, live abalone, and premium canned seaweed sets—are available at up to 53% off the market price through the Suhyup online mall (Suhyup Shopping) and KakaoTalk.
