The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that a super-large logistics center jointly invested in and constructed by Korean logistics companies and Korea Ocean Business Corporation (KOBC) in Elwood near Chicago, Illinois has begun full-scale operations.

As a large-scale logistics center with a site area of 295,000 square meters and a total floor area of 103,000 square meters—equivalent in size to 14 soccer fields—Elwood Logistics Center boasts optimal logistics processing facilities, including 130 docks for the loading and unloading of large cargo trucks.

Particularly noteworthy are the excellent accessibility and strategic location of the site, in addition to its modern infrastructure. The Elwood area in Illinois—where the logistics center is located—is about 72 km southwest of downtown Chicago and within 5.5 km of the US’s largest logistics hub (Centerpoint Intermodal Center), enabling delivery to anywhere in the US within two days via rail and road networks.

Since 2011, MOF has been supporting the development of overseas logistics markets by selecting 5 to 10 companies annually and providing up to KRW 200 million in funding for feasibility studies to facilitate the smooth entry of logistics companies into overseas markets. This logistics center project was also supported through feasibility study funding provided in 2022.

Meanwhile, MOF and Korea Ocean Business Corporation (KOBC) established a KRW 1 trillion global logistics supply chain investment fund for strengthened supply chain stability to support Korean logistics companies in securing overseas logistics assets, with the goal of securing 40 public-private joint logistics centers by 2030. MOF plans to designate logistics centers jointly invested in by public institutions as overseas joint logistics centers through KOTRA so that the country’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and mid-sized companies can use them at a low cost.

“We expect this project to enhance the competitiveness of Korean logistics companies and provide stable logistics services to Korean import and export companies operating in the US. In addition to public-private joint investment, we will expand various policy initiatives, including providing information on overseas logistics markets and supporting logistics companies’ expansion into overseas markets,” said Kim Hye-jeong, Director General of Shipping and Logistics at MOF.
