Issuance of Red Tide “Alert” Level
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it issued an "Alert" stage red tide crisis warning* as of 6 PM on Thursday, August 27. This upgrade from “Caution” to “Alert” follows the issuance of a red tide advisory by the National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS)** for two coastal areas—off the central coast of South Gyeongsang Province and the eastern coast of Geoje—at 4 PM on the same day.
* Interest (July) → Caution (≥ 2 preliminary special advisories for specific sea areas) → Alert (≥ 2 advisories) → Severe (≥ 2 warnings)
** Preliminary Special Advisory (≥ 10 individuals/㎖) → Advisory (≥ 100 individuals) → Warning (≥1,000 individuals)
NIFS reported that small red tide patches are currently scattered intermittently along the coastal waters of the Tongyeong and Geoje areas. They are expected to spread further if the rise in water temperatures slows and rainfall brings an influx of land-derived nutrients.
MOF has upgraded its existing situation room to an Emergency Response Headquarters after elevating the crisis warning to Alert. In close cooperation with NIFS, local governments, and Korea Coast Guard, MOF plans to strengthen damage minimization measures including the following: △ intensifying red tide monitoring and analyzing spread trends; △ carrying out intensive initial control measures in affected areas; and △ providing training and guidance to fish farmers on managing their farms.
“With red tide expected to spread along the southern coast following the recent high water temperatures, we will closely monitor the situation and respond quickly to minimize damage to fisheries. I also urge fish farmers to take precautions, including adjusting feed levels and checking their red tide response equipment,” said Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Hwang Jong-woo.
