First Batch of Blue Food Tech Professionals Graduating to Lead Innovation in the Seafood and Food Industry
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it would be holding a master's degree conferment ceremony for 14 graduates of the first batch of the Blue Food Tech Contract-Based Department at Gyeongsang National University on Tuesday, August 25.
The Blue Food Tech Contract-Based Department is a company-tailored master's program designed to cultivate professionals specializing in the new Blue Food industry by incorporating cutting-edge technology, targeting employees in the seafood sector. MOF established the nation's first Blue Food Tech Contract-Based Department at Gyeongsang National University in September 2024 and has since supported the four-semester, two-year curriculum, including student tuition and departmental operating expenses.
Graduates completed a 24-credit curriculum over two years and wrote a thesis in the field of seafood. In particular, they conducted research on industry-relevant topics, including △ developing new products using seafood, △ examining the health benefits of seafood products, and △ analyzing the effectiveness of sanitation treatments used in seafood processing. Their research produced findings that can contribute to higher value-added seafood products and greater industry competitiveness.
MOF also carried out projects to identify challenges faced by participating companies and help address them through expert consulting and joint research. These efforts produced practical outcomes for the industry, including developing pet food from fishery by-products and new products using domestic seafood such as oysters and conger eels.
Meanwhile, MOF plans to expand the training of personnel specializing in the blue food tech field by opening a new Blue Food Tech Contract-Based Department at Seoul National University starting September this year.
“I sincerely congratulate the first graduating class of the Blue Food Tech program at Gyeongsang National University. We will continue to support the training of industry-ready professionals who can help create greater value in the seafood industry,” said Choi Hyun-ho, Deputy Minister for Fisheries Policy at MOF.
