Easing the Burden of Grocery Prices for Chuseok Holiday by Supplying a Record High of 20,000 Tons of Stockpiled Seafood
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it would be supplying 20,000 tons of government-stockpiled seafood including pollock, mackerel, and squid to the market from Monday, August 24 to Sunday, September 27 to ease the burden of seafood prices on the public ahead of the Chuseok Holiday.
This is the largest release ever as an all-out effort to stabilize market prices and ease the price burden felt by the public by increasing the supply of major seafood products, demand for which rises ahead of Chuseok.
By item, 15,700 tons of pollock, 1,500 tons of mackerel, 1,700 tons of squid, 800 tons of hairtail, 200 tons of yellow croaker, and 100 tons of dried anchovies will be supplied. In particular, MOF plans to supply products that require less preparation, such as mackerel fillets, frozen pollock fillets, and whole dried pollock, for greater consumer convenience.
The stockpiled supply will be distributed through major traditional markets, supermarkets, and online and offline wholesale markets nationwide, and consumers can purchase these products at prices up to 40% below market prices
“We will release a record volume of stockpiled seafood so people can purchase seafood at reasonable prices ahead of the Chuseok holiday. We will continue to closely monitor the supply, demand, and prices of major seafood products and take effective measures to keep supplies and prices stable,” said Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Hwang Jong-woo.
