Designing Safety at Sea…
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo), Korea Coast Guard (KCG; Acting Commissioner General Jang In-sik), and Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority (KOMSA; Chairman Ahn Young-cheol) announced that they would be holding the 2026 Maritime Safety Content Contest from Monday, August 24 to Thursday, October 22.
MOF, KCG, and Public-Private Marine Safety Council* have held a public participation contest every year since 2013 to discover novel ideas for practicing and promoting maritime safety and to utilize them in maritime safety policies, education, and promotion.
* A public-private consultative body involving institutions, companies, and organizations in the maritime and fisheries sector such as MOF, Federation of Korea Maritime Industries, KOMSA, and National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, promoting the spread of safety culture through marine safety campaigns and public relations.
This year's contest will be expanded to five categories by adding emoticons and maritime traffic safety radio to the existing categories of drawings, AI designs, and AI short-form videos. The contest theme is maritime safety and prevention of maritime accidents, and participants can freely propose ideas such as making life jackets part of daily life, preventing the operation of vessels under the influence of alcohol, promoting safe fishing operations, and preventing fire accidents.
All citizens including the general public and students can participate, but the drawing category is open only to elementary school students and younger. Entries can be submitted through the contest page on the Public-Private Marine Safety Council website (www.해양안전공모전.com).
The winners (41 people in all) will receive certificates including the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Award, Commissioner General of the Korea Coast Guard Award, and Chairman of the KOMSA Award along with prize money totaling KRW 22.2 million.
“We will put the public’s creative ideas to good use so they can help spread a culture of maritime safety and encourage safer practices. We look forward to strong public interest and participation in making our seas safer,” said Jeong Do-hyeon, Director General of Maritime Safety at MOF.
