The Beautiful Fishways in Photos and Short-form Videos
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that it will host the “8th Fishway Photo & Short-form Video Contest”* from Tuesday, August 18, to Monday, October 5, 2026. The contest aims to raise public awareness of fishways and promote the National Fishway Information System, which provides comprehensive data on fishways nationwide.
* Fishway: Structures built near obstacles in rivers, such as weirs, to allow fish and other aquatic life to move freely.
Celebrating its 8th anniversary this year, the contest is open to anyone residing in South Korea, including foreign nationals. Participants can enter by taking photos or producing short-form videos (under 60 seconds) showcasing the beauty of fishways installed in rivers and streams across the country or highlighting their ecological importance. Entries must be submitted through the National Fishway Information System website (www.fishway.go.kr).
Notably, starting this year, the use of generative AI is permitted for the short-form video category to reduce the production burden on participants, which is expected to encourage more diverse and creative submissions.
Entries will be evaluated based on relevance to the theme, artistic quality, and educational/promotional utility. A total of 30 winners will be selected?including 1 Grand Prize, 3 Top Excellence Prizes, 6 Excellence Prizes, and 20 Honorable Mentions?with awards and total prize money of 10 million KRW. The winning works will be used for future fishway promotion. Detailed information regarding participation can be found on the National Fishway Information System website.
Park Seung-jun, Director General for Fishery Infrastructure and Aquaculture Policy at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, said, "We hope this contest serves as an opportunity to widely promote the importance of fishways," adding, "As fishways themselves can become beautiful local landmarks, we encourage active interest and participation from the public."
