“Caution: Flooding in Low-lying Coastal Areas During High Tide,” Sea Levels Higher Than Usual This Week!
The Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency (KHOA; Acting Director General Cha Seong-shin) of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) is urging special caution for flooding in low-lying coastal areas and safety accidents for summer vacationers, as sea levels will rise higher than usual during the New Moon Spring Tides (the first day of the lunar month) from Thursday, August 13 to Sunday, August 16.
According to KHOA, the coastal areas of the western and southern seas including Incheon, Gunsan, Changwon, and Jeju are expected to experience at least the Caution* level of 4-level high tide information** during this spring tide period. In Incheon in particular, the sea level is forecast to rise to the alert level*** on August 14 and 15, possibly causing temporary flooding in low-lying coastal areas during high tide.
* (High Tide Information) The flood risk of low-lying coastal areas is classified into four levels
(Attention-Caution-Alert-Danger) based on sea level.
** (Caution Level) Level wherein there is a possibility of flooding by seawater
*** (Alert Level) Level wherein there is high risk of flooding by seawater
In addition, as this spring tide period coincides with the peak summer vacation season when tourists flock to the area, greater caution is required regarding safety accidents such as getting trapped in mudflats or being swept away by waves on coastal walkways and breakwaters
KHOA plans to prepare for flood damage by sharing forecast high tide times* and sea level height information with local governments and relevant agencies during this spring tide period and to strengthen real-time sea level monitoring. It will also conduct surveys on the extents of flood inundation using the latest surveying equipment such as drones in five regions** including Incheon to improve the accuracy of flood forecasts.
* (High tide time) The time when the seawater is at its highest
** (5 regions) Incheon, Busan, Changwon (Jinhae and Masan Happo), Geoje, and Tongyeong
Real-time sea level heights by region are available through the real-time high tide information service (www.khoa.go.kr/hightide) on the KHOA website (www.khoa.go.kr).
“During this August new moon spring tide period, sea levels will rise significantly, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying coastal areas as well as accidents involving summer vacationers. Please follow local government guidance and observe safety rules during high tide,” said Cha Seong-shin, Acting Director General of KHOA.
