Selection of August’s Fishery Products, Travel Destination Fishing Villages, Marine Life, Lighthouses, and Uninhabited Island of the Month
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) selected shrimp and eels as August’s Fishery Products of the Month.
Shrimp is a general term for crustaceans belonging to the order Decapoda, characterized by a hard exoskeleton and the ability to swim backward by rapidly bending their abdominal segments. Whiteleg shrimp are readily available in Korea and are low in fat, containing protein, selenium, and essential amino acids. Fleshy prawns are wild shrimp found mainly in Korea’s West Sea. They have a mild, subtle sweetness and contain nutrients such as calcium and betaine. Saewoojang is a representative Korean shrimp dish made by aging fresh shrimp in soy sauce, letting you enjoy both firm texture and savory umami flavor.
Among eels, the white-spotted conger eel and the pike conger are marine species inhabiting the sea; they are considered representative health-boosting seafood for the summer. The white-spotted conger eel is characterized by its slender, long body, grayish-brown color, and white spots along the lateral line of its body. The pike conger eel has a long, laterally flattened body, with a large, triangular mouth and sharp teeth. Eel seasoned with salt or seasoning and grilled is a representative eel dish that lets you enjoy a savory flavor and a soft yet chewy texture.

② Travel Destination Fishing Villages of the Month – Dunjang Village in Shinan, Jeonnam Province and Bongam Mongdol Village in Tongyeong, Gyeongnam Province
MOF selected Dunjang Village in Sinan-gun, Jeonnam Province and Bongam Mongdol Village in Tongyeong-si, Gyeongsangnam-do—where visitors can escape the continuous summer heatwave, forget the sweltering heat in the cool sea, and enjoy a variety of experiences—as August’s Travel Destination Fishing Villages of the Month.
As a fishing village experience resort village located on Jaeun-do Island, Dunjang Village is a summer vacation spot where visitors can enjoy fishing village experiences and seaside walks while savoring the cool sea breeze. The village also offers clam digging experiences where you collect hard clams and surf clams in the tidal flats, as well as traditional seine net and triangular net experiences where you catch fish by pulling a net. In addition, you can enjoy a refreshing walk over the sea and admire the beautiful sunset on a summer night at the Infinite Bridge, a pedestrian bridge with total length of 1,004 meters connecting the wide-open Dunjang Beach and uninhabited island of Halmido.
Bongam Mongdol Village on Chubongdo Island, which is connected by a bridge from Hansando Island in Tongyeong-si, Gyeongnam Province, is a fishing village where you can enjoy both the pebble beach and the coastal scenery of Hallyeohaesang National Park. Made up of black pebbles instead of sand, the beach is the perfect summer getaway where you can enjoy walks and swimming while listening to the sound of the pebbles colliding. Experience programs include bare-handed fishing, clam digging, and fish trap fishing. You can also taste local specialties from the pristine waters such as Hansando seaweed, black shrimp, and hijiki directly at the specialty market operated by the village every weekend.

③ Marine Life of the Month – Green Sea Turtle
MOF selected the green sea turtle(Chelonia mydas) as August’s Marine Life of the Month, in commemoration of the sea turtle release scheduled for August 27.
The green sea turtle is primarily found in the waters of Jeju Island, South Sea, and East Sea and is the most commonly observed among the five species* of sea turtles that appear in Korean waters. They stay in domestic coastal waters to find food and they exhibit natal homing, returning to the seashore where they were born to lay eggs when the spawning season arrives.

Adults have body length of 70–150 cm and weigh 110–190 kg. As one of the larger sea turtles, they are characterized by a relatively flat body, a small head, and a hard, oval-shaped carapace in various colors ranging from yellowish-green to black. The forelimbs are flat like oars, each with a single claw.
Since 2012, MOF has been managing green sea turtles—whose population is declining due to bycatch, marine pollution, and damage to nesting grounds—by designating them as a marine protected species. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) also classifies the green sea turtle as Least Concern (LC).
In collaboration with expert organizations, MOF is pursuing rescue and rehabilitation efforts* for specimens injured through bycatch or beaching alongside research on artificial breeding and propagation. Efforts have been made since 2017 to restore the wild population by releasing individuals that have been treated or bred into the Jungmun area of Jeju, where there are past records of sea turtle nesting.

Aqua Planet Yeosu in Yeosu—the host city of the World Island Expo starting September—has been conducting artificial breeding research for the conservation of sea turtles since 2017, having succeeded in artificially breeding about 100 green sea turtles as of 2024.

④ Lighthouse of the Month – Mallipo Port Breakwater Lighthouse
MOF selected the Mallipo Port Breakwater Lighthouse located in Mohang-ri, Sowon-myeon, Taean-gun, Chungnam Province as August’s Lighthouse of the Month. This lighthouse was first installed in 1981, serving as a safety guide for ships entering and leaving Mallipo Port by flashing a red light every 6 seconds.
The red lighthouse located at the edge of Mallipo Beach—considered one of the top three beaches on the west coast for its beautiful sunsets—creates a spectacular sight in harmony with the red sunset. A Lighthouse Painting event was held in 2025 to allow visitors to paint murals on the lighthouse, providing them with a new attraction.
In Sowon-myeon, Taean-gun are various tourist attractions where visitors can enjoy diverse experiences: the Mutdakseom Deck Path, where you can enjoy the beautiful sea, tidal flats, and pine forest along the Mallipo coast; Cheollipo Arboretum, the first private arboretum in Korea; Oil Spill Recovery Memorial Hall, which records the process of overcoming the oil spill accident that occurred on the West Coast in December 2007; and Padori Sea Cave, which is famous as a photo spot.
A delicacy in this region is Parksok Milguk Nakji-tang, a clear, refreshing soup made by adding sliced gourd pulp along with octopus and vegetables and served with noodles and sujebi (hand-pulled dough soup); it stimulates the appetite in summer and has lots of taurine, making it good for restoring vitality. Known as the ginseng of the summer tidal flat, octopus is a health food rich in various minerals such as protein, calcium, and iron and is a representative summer health food of Taean.

⑤ Uninhabited Island of the Month – Byeongpungdo Island
MOF selected Byeongpungdo Island—a semi-conservation uninhabited island* located in Geunheung-myeon, Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, Jeonnam Province—as August’s Uninhabited Island of the Month.
* Uninhabited islands with high conservation value where certain activities such as construction, installation of artificial structures, land alteration, capture or collection of animals and plants, cooking, and camping are restricted, including access if necessary.
Located about 36 km west of Anheung Port, Byeongpungdo has an area of about 9,620 m². Most of the island is made up of bedrock; in particular, the vertical rock cliffs carved by the waves create a spectacular sight that looks like a fortress wall or a folding screen, so it was named Byeongpungdo (meaning folding screen).
In the past, the sea route from Sinjindo Port in Taean passing through Gaido Island to Gyeokryeolbyeol Island was such an important path that it was called "Silk Road of the West Sea" by the residents. Byeongpungdo in the middle became a reliable landmark for sailors and also served as a resting place to catch their breath while sheltering from rough winds and waves.
Thanks to the infrequent human footsteps, the nature of Byeongpungdo is kept intact. The upper part of the island is surrounded by diverse plant communities such as large-leaved silverberry, silver grass, daylilies, camellias, and Machilus thunbergii; red camellia flowers bloom especially in winter, beautifully coloring the island. The dense forest serves as a precious sanctuary for rare seabirds such as the peregrine falcon and black-tailed gull, which are natural monuments.
