Arctic Youth Expedition Team Departs to Inspire Future Scientists
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) announced that the youth Arctic research expedition team 21C Dasan Junior would be going on a 6-night, 8-day expedition from Sunday, July 26 to Sunday, August 2.
The 21C Dasan Junior program was established to provide young students who dream of becoming future polar scientists with the opportunity to experience Arctic research sites directly. It is the only youth program in Korea that visits the Ny-Ålesund Science Village* where the Dasan Arctic Station** is located. First launched in 2005, the program marks its 20th year this year. A total of 116 young participants will have visited the Arctic through this program by the end of this year's expedition. For this year's recruitment for the 21C Dasan Junior program, 578 high school students from across the country applied, with 4 finally selected after document screening, polar science quizzes, and interviews.
* Opened on April 29, 2002 and located on Spitsbergen Island, Svalbard archipelago, Norway (78°N). Dasan Arctic Station researches Arctic sea ice conditions, atmospheric observations, ecosystem monitoring, and more.
** Ny-Ålesund Science Village hosts research stations from various countries including Germany (1990), Japan (1990), United Kingdom (1991), Netherlands (1995), Italy (1997), Norway (1999), France (1999), China (2004), and India (2008), in addition to South Korea.
The Youth Arctic Research Expedition Team will arrive at the Dasan Arctic Station on July 27 and conduct various hands-on research activities over approximately four days, including observing Arctic flora and fauna, collecting glacier samples, and experiencing weather observation activities. Before and after the visit to the station, the team also has plans to visit museums in Norway's Svalbard archipelago and Oslo as well as explore glacial sediment zones.
"The 21C Dasan Junior program is a valuable opportunity for our youth to experience Arctic research sites firsthand. We will continue actively supporting this program so that future generations can nurture their dreams of becoming polar researchers," said Yoo Eun-won, Director-General for Marine Policy at MOF.
