The Charm of Islands Captured Directly by the Public: Holding the 12th Island Travel Video Contest
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Hwang Jong-woo) and the Korea Shipping Association (KSA; President Lee Chae-ik) announced that they would be holding the 12th Island Travel Video Contest to promote the charms of island travel through video content produced by the public, with submissions accepted from Saturday, August 1 to Saturday, October 10.
The application period for this year’s contest was set from August to October so that not only summer vacationers but also visitors to the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo to be held in September can participate.
Any Korean citizen may enter by creating a video that captures their special travel story—from the excitement of setting off for an island on a coastal passenger ship to the colorful scenery and memories encountered there. Edit the entry to fit the specified format*, upload it to your social media (SNS) account with visibility set to public, and submit it via email (islandtour@theksa.or.kr) by October 10 to complete the application process.
* For general videos, the required length is 4 minutes 30 seconds to 5 minutes; for vertical short-form videos, the required length is 50 to 120 seconds. Other detailed information including mandatory hashtags is available on the contest website (www.theksa.or.kr/islandtour).
A total of 57 winners will receive certificates and prize money totaling KRW 13.4 million. The Grand Prize winner will receive the Minister's Award and KRW 5 million in prize money. The Top Excellence Prize and Excellence Prize winners will receive the KSA President's Award and KRW 3 million and KRW 1 million, respectively. The winning entries will be used as promotional content by MOF and related agencies to highlight the charms of our islands and coastal passenger ships.
* Grand Prize: 1 winner (Minister's Award, KRW 5 million), Top Excellence Award: 1 winner (KSA President's Award, KRW 3 million), Excellence Award: 2 winners (KSA President's Award, KRW 1 million), Special Award: 3 winners (Korea Island Development Institute President's Award, KRW 300,000), Participation Award: 50 winners (KRW 50,000 Onnuri Gift Certificate)
“Islands are spaces where not only beautiful nature, but also local culture, life, and long-standing stories come alive together. I hope this contest will be a meaningful opportunity for the public to share special memories experienced during island travels, serving as a starting point for new island travels,” said Kim Hye-jeong, Director General of Shipping and Logistics at MOF.
According to President Lee Chae-ik of the Korea Shipping Association, this contest will serve as an opportunity to raise interest in coastal passenger ships and generate new passenger demand through vivid island travel content created by the public. “We will continue to support the revitalization of island tourism so that the public can enjoy island travel," he added.
